Baby Rompers in Kenya: Types, Fabrics and Sizes (2026)

Zawadi Baby Shop · Updated 25 Sep 2026 · 5 min read
Baby clothes and a pacifier on a knitted blanket, rompers guide by Zawadi Baby Shop Nairobi.

A baby romper is a one-piece outfit that covers the body and legs, often with covered feet, and opens with snaps or a zip for diaper changes. Choose cotton for warm days, a heavier knit or fleece for cold nights, and a size with room to grow. At Zawadi, rompers cost KES 900 to 1,500 as of September 2026.

This guide explains the types of romper, which fabric suits which weather, how to pick the right size, and how to dress your baby for sleep without overheating.

What is the difference between a romper and a onesie?

A romper covers the legs, and often the feet, while a onesie (also called a bodysuit or vest) stops at the top of the legs and fastens with snaps under the bottom. Parents use onesies as a first layer and rompers as the outfit on top, or on their own on a mild day.

Which romper fabric suits Kenyan weather?

Cotton suits most days in Kenya, and heavier knits or fleece suit cold mornings, evenings and the cold season. Nairobi and the highlands can be warm in the afternoon and cold at night, so many parents keep both in the drawer.

  • Cotton: breathable and soft on new skin. Good for daytime and for warmer parts of the country.
  • Heavy knit: a thicker fabric for cold mornings and evenings.
  • Fleece: the warmest option. Use it when it is truly cold, and check your baby does not get too hot.

For layering ideas through the rainy season, read our guide to dressing your baby for cold weather.

What size romper should you buy?

Buy by your baby’s age and length on the label, and go one size up if your baby is between sizes. Babies grow fast in the first months, so buy only a few rompers in newborn size.

  1. Check the size label for the age range, and compare it with your baby’s length from the clinic card.
  2. Make sure covered feet leave room for the toes. If the romper pulls at the shoulders when your baby stretches their legs, it is too small.
  3. Wash new rompers before the first wear. Cotton can shrink a little in the first wash.

How should you dress a baby in a romper for sleep?

Dress your baby warmly enough to be comfortable, but not hot. The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) says overheating can increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It advises keeping the room at about 16 to 20°C and removing a layer of clothing or bedding if your baby’s skin is hot or sweaty.

On a mild night a cotton romper may be enough; keep fleece for genuinely cold nights. Do not put a hat on a sleeping baby indoors, and keep the cot clear of anything that could cover their face and head. If your baby is unwell or has a fever, see your clinic rather than adding layers.

What should you check before you buy a baby romper?

Check how the romper opens, how it feels, and how well it is finished. A good romper makes diaper changes quick and has nothing that can come loose.

  • Snaps down the legs or a long zip, so you can change a diaper without undressing your baby completely.
  • A zip with a fabric guard at the chin.
  • Soft, flat seams, and no loose threads, buttons or trims a baby could pull off.
  • Fabric that is soft on the inside and easy to wash.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a romper and a onesie?

A romper covers the legs and often the feet, while a onesie or bodysuit stops at the top of the legs and fastens with snaps under the bottom. Many parents use a onesie as a first layer and a romper on top.

How many rompers does a newborn need?

Newborns can need several changes a day because of leaks and spit-up, so keep enough rompers to last between washes. Buy only a few in newborn size, because babies outgrow it quickly.

Are fleece rompers good for night-time?

Fleece is warm, so keep it for genuinely cold nights and check your baby is not too hot. The UK National Health Service says overheating can increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, so remove a layer if your baby is hot or sweaty.

How much are baby rompers in Kenya?

At Zawadi Baby Shop, baby rompers cost KES 900 to 1,500 as of September 2026, including a set of three cotton rompers for KES 1,500. Prices change, so check the product page for the current price.

What size romper should I buy for a newborn?

Check the age and length on the label and compare it with your baby’s length from the clinic card. If your baby is between sizes, choose the bigger one, and make sure covered feet leave room for the toes.
