A newborn receiving set is a matching pack of first clothes for bringing your baby home: usually vests or bodysuits, a sleepsuit or trousers, a top, a cap, mittens and a bib, and sometimes a shawl or blanket. Plan on two or three sets plus a few extra vests. Ours cost KES 600 to 1,500 as of October 2026.
This guide lists every piece you will find in a receiving set, how many of each your baby needs in the first weeks, and how the four sets we stock compare.
What is a receiving set for a newborn baby?
A receiving set is a bundle of matching newborn clothes, sold together so you have a complete outfit ready for the day your baby comes home. A receiving set also makes a practical gift for a new mum, because one pack covers the first few changes.
The pieces vary from set to set. A small set may hold a top, trousers, a cap and a bib, while a larger set adds a sleepsuit, mittens, booties and a shawl. You can see every set we stock in our receiving sets range.
What is in a receiving set? The full list
Most receiving sets are built from the pieces below. The last column is a practical starting point for the first weeks if you wash every two or three days. Newborns often need several changes a day because of spit-ups and leaking diapers.
| Piece | What it is for | How many for the first weeks |
|---|---|---|
| Vest or bodysuit | The layer next to the skin. A bodysuit snaps between the legs so it stays tucked in | 5 to 7 |
| Sleepsuit (footed romper) | A one-piece outfit for day and night that covers the feet | 4 to 6 |
| Top or cardigan | A layer over the vest on cooler days | 2 to 3 |
| Trousers (often footed) | Worn with a top or a vest | 3 to 4 |
| Cap | Outdoors and on cool mornings, not for sleep indoors | 2 |
| Mittens | Keep tiny hands covered | 2 pairs |
| Socks or booties | Keep feet warm with trousers that are not footed | 2 to 3 pairs |
| Bib | Catches milk and spit-up during feeds | 3 to 4 |
| Shawl or receiving blanket | Wraps your baby when you hold them or go out | 2 to 3 |
Count what each set already holds before you buy single pieces, so you do not end up with ten caps and two vests. Our newborn shopping checklist covers everything else to have ready, from diapers to the cot.
How many receiving sets does a newborn need?
Two or three receiving sets are enough for most newborns, topped up with a few extra vests and sleepsuits. That gives you a clean outfit for every change while the rest are in the wash.
Do not buy too much of the first size. Babies grow fast, and the first clothes are outgrown within weeks. If friends and family are likely to give you receiving sets as gifts, buy one before the birth for the hospital bag and wait to see what arrives.
A small set is an easy way to add extra changes. Our 5-piece receiving set has a wrap top with snaps, two pairs of trousers, a cap and a bib.

Which receiving set should you choose?
Choose by the weather and by how complete you want the set to be. Here is what is inside each set we stock:
| Set | What is inside | Fabric | Good for | Price at Zawadi (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5-piece | Wrap top with snaps, 2 pairs of trousers (one footed), cap, bib | Cotton | Extra changes, or a small gift | KES 600 |
| 11-piece | Long-sleeve top, front-button cardigan, 2 pairs of footed trousers, sleeveless overall, hooded shawl, cloth belt, cap, mittens, booties, bib | Cotton | The widest mix of pieces in one pack | KES 1,100 |
| 8-piece cotton | Footed sleepsuit, short-sleeve bodysuit, T-shirt, long-sleeve top, footed trousers, cap, mittens, bib | Cotton | Everyday wear on mild days | KES 1,500 |
| 8-piece fleece | Long-sleeve top, 2 pairs of trousers, hooded jacket, hooded footed sleepsuit, short-sleeve vest, hooded receiving blanket, wrap blanket | Fleece | Cool mornings and evenings, and the rainy seasons | KES 1,500 |
The 11-piece receiving set gives you the most pieces, including a hooded shawl. For colder weather, the 8-piece fleece receiving set is the warmest, while the 8-piece cotton receiving set suits warmer days. Our guide to dressing your baby for the cold, rainy season shows how to layer them.

What should you look for in newborn clothes?
Look for clothes that are easy to put on and take off, because a newborn does not enjoy being dressed. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests choosing clothes that:
- Snap or zip all the way down the front, not the back.
- Snap down both legs, so diaper changes are quicker.
- Have loose sleeves, so your hand fits inside to guide your baby’s arm through.
- Have no ribbons or strings that could wrap around the neck.
- Are made of stretchy fabric, without tight bands at the arms, legs or neck.
Some bibs in receiving sets tie at the back of the neck. Use a bib only during feeds, take it off afterwards, and never leave your baby to sleep in one.
For warmth, the AAP’s rule of thumb is to dress your baby in one more layer than you need to feel comfortable in the same room. Wash every new piece before the first wear, and follow the care label.
Can a baby sleep in a receiving set?
Yes, the sleepsuits, vests and trousers are fine for sleep, but take off the cap and the bib first. Do not put a hat on a sleeping baby indoors, and keep your baby from getting too hot.
Shawls and receiving blankets are for wrapping your baby when you hold them or go out. In the cot, lay your baby on their back on a firm, flat mattress with nothing loose around them. Our baby rompers guide explains how to dress your baby for the night. If your baby feels very hot or very cold, or you are worried, see your clinic or paediatrician.

How many receiving sets does a newborn need?
Two or three receiving sets are enough for most newborns, plus a few extra vests and sleepsuits. Babies outgrow the first size within weeks, so do not buy too many in one size.

At Zawadi Baby Shop, receiving sets cost KES 600 to 1,500 as of October 2026: KES 600 for 5 pieces, KES 1,100 for 11 pieces and KES 1,500 for 8 pieces in cotton or fleece. Check each product page for the current price.
When should I buy a receiving set?
Buy at least one receiving set before the birth so it is packed in your hospital bag for the trip home. Wait for baby shower gifts before you buy more.
