Breast Pumps in Kenya: Manual, Electric or Wearable?

Zawadi Baby Shop · Updated 25 Sep 2026 · 5 min read
Manual breast pump with a bottle of milk, breast pump guide by Zawadi Baby Shop Nairobi.

A manual breast pump suits occasional expressing; an electric pump is quicker if you express every day, and a double pump expresses both breasts at once. A wearable pump sits inside your bra so your hands stay free. At Zawadi Baby Shop, breast pumps cost KES 1,000 to 8,500 as of September 2026.

This guide explains when a pump is worth buying, compares the types and prices, and covers how to choose, store milk and keep the pump clean. For help with breastfeeding itself, your clinic nurse, midwife or a lactation consultant is the best person to see.

Is it necessary to get a breast pump?

Not every mother needs a breast pump. A pump is useful if you will be away from your baby, for example after returning to work, if you want someone else to give some feeds, or if your clinic advises expressing, such as when a baby is in the newborn unit.

If breastfeeding is painful or your baby is not feeding well, see your clinic before you buy a pump. Our breastfeeding guide covers where to get help.

When is the right time to buy one? Before or after the baby is born?

If you already know you will go back to work, buy a pump a few weeks before, so you have time to practise. Otherwise you can wait until after the birth and see how feeding goes.

Choose carefully: the US Food and Drug Administration notes that, for health reasons, most stores do not accept breast pumps back once opened. Come and look at the pumps in our shop before you decide.

What are the different types of breast pumps?

There are three main types: manual pumps you work by hand, electric pumps (plug-in or rechargeable), and wearable pumps that sit inside your bra. Each can be single, for one breast at a time, or double, for both at once.

How do you choose a breast pump?

Choose by how often you will pump, where, and how much time you have. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suggests thinking about:

  1. How you will use it: the odd session alongside breastfeeding, or pumping every day.
  2. Time: electric pumps can be quicker, and a double pump may cut the time each session takes.
  3. Ease of use: read the instructions and see how the parts fit together.
  4. Where you will pump: at home, at work, or on the move.
  5. How easy it is to carry between home and work.
  6. Breast-shield fit: the FDA advises making sure the breast-shield opening is the correct size for you.

Pumping should not hurt. If it does, stop, check the shield size and the suction setting, and ask your clinic or a lactation consultant for help.

Manual, electric or wearable: which suits you?

Match the pump to your days. As a guide:

  • Now and then, at home: a manual pump is light, quiet and needs no power.
  • Every working day: a double electric pump saves time. A rechargeable one keeps working during a power cut.
  • Busy days on the move: a wearable pump fits inside your bra, so you can pump hands-free.
  • Catching let-down on the other side while your baby feeds: a silicone milk saver.

You can compare all of them in our breast pumps range.

How do you store expressed breast milk?

Store expressed milk in clean, closed containers or storage bags in the fridge or freezer, and write the date on each one. Ask your clinic how long expressed milk keeps, and use the oldest milk first.

Storage bags lie flat in the freezer and take less space than bottles. Our milk storage bags come 50 to a pack, each holding up to 220ml.

How do you keep a breast pump clean?

Wash every part that touches milk after each use, following the maker’s instructions, and let the parts dry before you put them away. Sterilise the parts the same way as feeding bottles: our feeding bottles guide explains the methods.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a breast pump in Kenya?

At Zawadi Baby Shop, breast pumps cost KES 1,000 to 8,500 as of September 2026. A manual pump is KES 1,000, electric pumps start at KES 1,600, and a wearable double pump is KES 8,500. Check the product page for the current price.

Is a manual or electric breast pump better?

A manual pump suits occasional expressing and needs no power. An electric pump, especially a double one, is quicker for daily pumping, for example at work. Choose by how often you will pump.

Is a wearable breast pump worth it?

A wearable pump fits inside your bra, so you can pump hands-free while you work or move around. It suits busy days; a standard electric pump may suit you if you pump in one place.

When should I buy a breast pump?

If you know you will return to work, buy one a few weeks before so you can practise. Otherwise you can wait until after the birth. Most stores do not take pumps back once opened, so choose carefully.

What size breast shield do I need?

The shield opening should fit your nipple without rubbing or pinching. The US Food and Drug Administration advises making sure the breast-shield opening is the correct size. If pumping hurts, stop and ask your clinic.
