Baby Rocker or Swing? How to Choose One Safely in Kenya

By Kui Thairu · Updated 23 Oct 2026 · 6 min read
Portable 2 in 1 baby rocker with a toy bar and a harness, at Zawadi Baby Shop Nairobi.

A baby rocker is a light seat that rocks when your baby moves or you nudge it; a baby swing has a motor that sways for you. Both are for awake time, never for sleep. Choose by the label’s age and weight limits, the harness and your space. Our rockers cost KES 2,900 to 6,000 as of October 2026.

A rocker or swing gives your baby a safe place to sit close to you while you cook, eat or rest your arms. This guide compares the two, explains how to use them safely, and shows what each type costs in Kenya.

What is the difference between a baby rocker and a baby swing?

The difference is the power. A baby rocker sits on a curved frame and rocks gently when your baby kicks or you push it with your hand or foot. A baby swing has an electric motor in the base that sways the seat for you, usually with speed settings.

Both are for an awake baby, so the choice comes down to your home and your routine. You can see every model side by side in our swings and rockers range.

Can a baby sleep in a rocker or swing?

No. A rocker or swing is not a safe place for a baby to sleep, even for a short nap. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises that if your baby falls asleep in a swing, car seat or stroller, you should move them to a firm sleep surface, on their back, as soon as possible.

The AAP also says any surface that tilts more than 10 degrees is not safe for a baby to sleep on, and the seat of a rocker or swing is tilted. If your baby drifts off:

  1. Stop the swing or the rocking.
  2. Undo the harness and lift your baby out.
  3. Lay your baby on their back in their cot or bassinet, on a firm, flat mattress with nothing loose around them.

Our baby sleep routine guide covers where and how your baby should sleep at each age. If your baby is hard to settle, or you are worried about how much they cry, see your clinic or paediatrician.

How do you use a baby rocker or swing safely?

Use a rocker or swing safely by strapping your baby in every time, keeping it on the floor and staying close by. These checks take a few seconds:

  1. Buckle the harness every time, even for a minute.
  2. Put the rocker or swing on the floor. Never on a table, a bed or a sofa, where rocking can move it to the edge.
  3. Stay in the same room, and keep older children and pets from pushing it.
  4. Keep power cables out of reach and away from where people walk.
  5. Follow the age and weight limits on the label, and stop using it once your baby reaches the limit or starts trying to climb out.

Which baby rocker should you choose?

Choose a rocker by how long you want to use it and what else it can do. All three of our rockers have a padded seat, a harness and a toy bar:

  • The portable 2 in 1 baby rocker is light and bright, with a musical frog on the toy bar and a music and vibration unit.
  • The ibaby infant to toddler rocker is for babies from birth up to 18 kg, as printed on its box. The toy bar comes off, and it becomes a toddler rocking chair.
  • The 3 in 1 baby rocker takes a clip-on feeding tray, so it also works as a first feeding seat. Our feeding chair guide explains when a baby is ready for one.

Which baby swing should you choose?

Choose a swing by where you will use it and how reliable your power is. In much of Kenya a mosquito net over the seat is worth having, and if you get power cuts, look for a swing that also runs on batteries.

  • The CoolBaby electric baby swing has a canopy with a fine mosquito net, two soft elephant toys and the controls on its low base.
  • The automatic baby swing with net runs on mains power or batteries, and comes with a remote control and a fitted mesh net.

Whichever you choose, a swing is somewhere to sit, play and calm down. When your baby is tired, their cot is the place to sleep. If you are also shopping for a rocking chair for yourself, see our nursing rocking chair guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can my baby sleep in a swing or rocker?

No. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that if your baby falls asleep in a swing, car seat or stroller, you move them to a firm sleep surface on their back as soon as possible. Use the cot or bassinet for every sleep.

How much is a baby rocker in Kenya?

At Zawadi Baby Shop, baby rockers cost KES 2,900 to 6,000 and electric baby swings KES 9,500 to 16,000, as of October 2026. Prices change, so check each product page for the current price.

From what age can a baby use a rocker?

Follow the age and weight limits on the label, which differ by model. For example, the box of our ibaby infant to toddler rocker gives from birth up to 18 kg. Stop once your baby reaches the limit or tries to climb out.

Is a baby swing better than a rocker?

Neither is better for every family. A swing moves on its own and often has a canopy and net, while a rocker is lighter and easier to move between rooms. Both are for an awake baby, never for sleep.

Do electric baby swings work during a power cut?

Only if the swing also takes batteries. Our automatic baby swing with net runs on mains power or batteries. Check the product page, or ask us in the shop, before you buy if power cuts are common where you live.
